LIC Endowment vs Term + Mutual Fund SIP: which builds more?
It’s the most important question in Indian personal finance, and the honest answer upsets a lot of people: for most families, a term plan plus a mutual-fund SIP builds more wealth than an LIC endowment policy — while still fully protecting your family. Here’s the plain-English math, with no sales pitch.
The two things an endowment bundles
An LIC endowment policy (like New Endowment 714 or Jeevan Labh 736) does two jobs at once: it gives your family a payout if you die, and it returns your money with bonuses if you survive. That sounds efficient, but bundling hides the real return. To compare fairly, you have to separate protection from investment.
The fair comparison
Take your endowment premium. Buy an equivalent term plan for a small fraction of it, and invest the rest in a mutual-fund SIP. Then compare the results over the same period.
| Rs 10 lakh cover, 25 years, age 30 | LIC endowment | Term + equity SIP |
|---|---|---|
| Life cover | Included | Rs 1 Cr term for ~Rs 10k/yr |
| Effective return | ~5–6% a year | ~10–12% historically |
| Approx value at maturity | ~Rs 25–26 lakh | ~Rs 45–50 lakh |
| Tax on gains | Tax-free (10(10D)) | 12.5% LTCG above Rs 1.25 L |
| Risk | Zero (guaranteed) | Market swings |
Even after tax, the term-plus-SIP route has historically built close to double the corpus, because equity compounds far faster than a participating policy’s bonus. Over any 15-year period in history, a Nifty 50 index fund has never delivered a negative return.
Why the gap is so wide
An endowment’s “guaranteed” 5–6% barely beats inflation. Rs 10 lakh today is worth roughly Rs 3.5 lakh in 25 years at 4% inflation, so a return that only just outpaces prices doesn’t grow your real wealth much. A term plan, meanwhile, costs so little that almost your whole budget stays invested for growth.
When LIC savings genuinely makes sense
This isn’t “never buy LIC.” An endowment is the right choice if you:
- want a guaranteed, no-risk return and would panic-sell equity in a crash;
- know you won’t stay disciplined with a monthly SIP — the premium obligation forces you to save;
- specifically value the tax-free maturity and a fixed lump sum on a date you can plan around.
For that portion of your money that must be safe, LIC is a sound, trustworthy home. For long-horizon growth, a SIP usually wins.
