Should You Surrender Your LIC Policy — or Keep It Going?

Surrendering a life-insurance policy early is one of the most expensive money mistakes people make in India — and often it is done in a moment of frustration or a cash crunch. Before you sign the surrender form, it is worth understanding exactly what you get, what you give up, and whether a cheaper option exists.

What you actually get when you surrender

You do not get your premiums back. You get a surrender value, which is the higher of the Guaranteed Surrender Value (GSV) and the Special Surrender Value (SSV). In the early years this is painfully low — often 30–35% of the premiums you have paid, and sometimes nothing at all in the first two or three years. The longer you have held the policy, the larger the surrender value grows.

What you give up

By surrendering you forfeit the maturity amount — your Sum Assured plus all the bonuses or guaranteed additions accrued so far and still to come — and your life cover ends immediately. On a policy you have held for ten or fifteen years, the gap between the surrender value today and the maturity you would get by continuing can run into lakhs. You can see this year by year on our Surrender Value Calculator.

When surrendering genuinely makes sense

  • You truly cannot afford the premiums and there is no cheaper way to keep the policy alive.
  • You are heavily over-insured with low-return endowment plans and want to move to a cheap term plan plus investments.
  • The policy has only a year or two left, where the surrender penalty is small.

Cheaper alternatives to surrendering

If cash flow is the only problem, you rarely need to surrender. Consider making the policy paid-up (stop paying, keep a reduced cover and maturity), taking a loan against the policy at a low interest rate, or simply reviving it later if it has lapsed. Each of these keeps the value you have already built.

The honest bottom line

If you can afford to continue, the maths almost always favours keeping the policy — the surrender penalty is real money you are handing back. Surrender only when the numbers, not the mood, say so. Run your own figures on the surrender vs. continue calculator first.
