Insurance Roundup — September 2026: GST-Free Cover, the LIC Stake Sale & a Global Shift

The numbers that actually matter this month — plain language, no jargon, no sales pitch. Mostly India, plus a look at the wider world.

LIC vs Private: same market, three different stories

Who leads Indian life insurance depends entirely on what you count — the most misunderstood thing in the industry:

How you measure it LIC Private What it tells you
New-business premium (FY2026) ~57% ~43% Roughly even on money collected; private catching up fast
Number of policies ~76% ~24% LIC issues 3 in every 4 policies; huge agent reach
Sum assured (individual) ~32% ~68% Private sells far more cover; more term and protection

The takeaway: LIC sells the most policies; private insurers sell the most protection. So “LIC is the biggest” and “private insurers dominate” are both true — they just measure different things. When you buy, ignore who is biggest and look at the plan: the cover, the claim record and the real return.

Momentum: in FY2026 the LIC new-business premium share slipped slightly (57.05% to 56.66%), and private insurers grew faster (about +12% vs LIC at +2.75% the prior year). Industry new-business premium hit roughly Rs 4.6 lakh crore, up about 16% year-on-year.

Know your rights: Niva Bupa ordered to pay Rs 2.65 lakh

A consumer court (Kangra District Consumer Commission, Himachal Pradesh) on 25 July 2026 ordered Niva Bupa to pay a policyholder about Rs 2.65 lakh after it wrongly rejected her surgery claim.

  • The insurer called an ovarian cyst a pre-existing condition and reset the waiting period, even though she had held continuous cover since July 2019.
  • The forum called it a deficiency in service and unfair trade practice, and ordered the full Rs 2,30,124 claim + 9% interest + Rs 20,000 for mental agony + Rs 15,000 costs.

Why it matters to you: insurers cannot reset your waiting period or brand something pre-existing just to avoid a payout, especially if your cover has been continuous. If a claim is unfairly rejected, the consumer forum route works and is cheap. Keep your policy continuous, and never accept a rejection at face value.

The door is opening: 100% FDI and new players

The Indian insurance market is about to get more crowded, which is good for buyers:

  • The Insurance Laws (Amendment) Act, 2025 (in force from 5 February 2026) now allows 100% foreign ownership of insurers.
  • IRDAI has already cleared new entrants including Allianz Jio Reinsurance and Kiwi General Insurance.
  • India currently has 26 life insurers; expect that number to climb.

For you: more competition usually means sharper pricing, more choice and better service, and more names to compare, which is what our tools are for.

Global Insurance Watch: AI is eating the industry

  • AI took over the money. AI-focused startups captured a record 95.2% of all global insurtech funding in Q1 2026 (up from 77.9%), out of about $1.63 billion raised.
  • AI-native insurer count: the US has about 70 AI-native insurance startups (the most of any country), followed by India (about 17) and the UK (about 14).
  • Climate keeps repricing risk. Insurers now expect to absorb an average of about $171 billion in catastrophe losses a year.
